Now - all of the above presumes that the person making these posts is taking no action to cover his or her tracks. But, your trail will stop there, because without a court-order, the actual IP owner (the Internet Service Provider) will not give you any other information. This means for example that you would know the IP is "owned" by Time Warner Cable and it's coming out of the Newark New Jersey office (again, just an example) - so best case, you would know that this person is probably located in the New Jersey (or whatever) general area. Once you have the IP address, it is trivial to plug it into a site like and get the IP owner and general location of the IP address. So let's pretend for a moment that you DO get the IP - THEN what? If it is your own blog that you host and have configured then it is possible to get the IP address if you have any sort of tracker or analytics set up on it.
